What Kumbia orders

Typical Kumbia jobs: grain, seed and fertiliser storage on the cropping ground, hay and lick storage on the grazing blocks running up towards the mountains, machinery and workshop overflow, equipment storage for the showground and sporting clubs, and secure storage on the small village allotments. We fill in a Kumbia order the same way every time — use, then grade, then length, then the truck — because skipping a step is how the wrong box gets delivered.

Long driveways and when to book

A three or four kilometre driveway is unremarkable out this way and it is only a problem in one set of conditions: after rain, on an unsealed surface, with no turning space. That combination is how a delivery becomes a recovery.

The fix is simply timing. If you can give a couple of dry days after real weather, the same driveway carries anything, and it costs nothing to wait. Where the container is needed regardless, placing near the front gate on firm ground and moving it in later with the tractor is the sensible compromise.

Tell us the driveway length and surface when you enquire. It is one of the more useful pieces of information you can give us.

Placing on rising ground

As the country climbs towards the mountains the access tracks steepen, and a slope changes two things. The truck needs somewhere reasonably level to line up and unload from, and the container needs to end up sitting flat.

The second is not optional. A container that is out of level twists through the frame, and the first symptom is doors that need a shoulder. Once the racking is in the steel it does not come out.

The practical answer on sloping country is to build a level pad — four bearing points shimmed to sit true, rather than trying to find natural ground that is already right. Concrete pads or doubled hardwood sleepers do it cheaply.

Access notes — Kumbia

Two things shape delivery at Kumbia: driveway length and the rise towards the ranges. Farm driveways here are long by district standards, frequently unsealed, and often the last kilometre is a good deal rougher than the first. That is fine for a loaded truck in dry conditions and it is the whole problem after rain, because the ruts hold water long after the paddocks have shed it and there is nowhere to turn around if it goes wrong. The rise is the second factor. As the country lifts towards the Bunya Mountains the gradients on the access tracks get steeper, and steeper matters more than it sounds — a truck that could place a container on the flat may not be able to line up on a slope, and a container has to sit level once it is down. That usually means placing on the best level ground on the property rather than the spot with the view. Gates and headlands are generous, and where a property has a shed apron a sidelifter can place a 40ft without difficulty. The soil is a mix through here, red on some blocks and heavier on others, and knowing which yours is tells us more about delivery timing than any general question would.

Three entries never change on an access docket: what the truck stands on, how long its straight run is, and what hangs above the drop. The access guide covers how to check each one.

Kumbia — questions on file

  1. My driveway is a few kilometres of unsealed track. Is that a problem?

Only after rain, and then a serious one because the ruts hold water long after the paddocks have dried and there is usually nowhere to turn around. Dry, the same track carries a loaded truck without complaint. Tell us the length and the surface when you enquire and we will pick the day accordingly.

  2. Can you place a container on a slope?

The truck needs reasonably level ground to unload from, and the container needs to finish sitting flat. On rising country the answer is usually to build a level pad — four bearing points shimmed true — rather than hunting for natural ground that already is. A container left out of level twists through the frame and the doors stop closing.

  3. What size suits hay storage on a grazing block?

A 40ft, on cost per cubic metre, provided the property has a long straight approach and roughly 30m of working room for a sidelifter. Most blocks up here do somewhere, even if it is not the first spot you would pick. Where it does not, two 20s will go where one 40ft will not.

  4. Do you deliver to the showground and sporting clubs at Kumbia?

Yes. Community and club storage is a regular job — gear that needs to be secure and able to sit unattended between events. If it must stay dry, go cargo-worthy or new, which are wind and watertight; as-is units are not sold watertight. Access at those facilities is generally wide and level, which makes them among the simpler placements on this run.
